The City of Hoboken is a one square-mile city of 53,000 residents along the Hudson River. Hoboken is vulnerable to two interconnected types of flooding: stormwater flooding from heavy rain events and coastal flooding from storm surge or exceptionally high tides. Hoboken is >90% impervious and relies on an aging combined sewer system for stormwater management that is over capacity, resulting in localized flooding and combined sewer overflow events. Green infrastructure and shade trees are key components of the City’s efforts to mitigate stormwater flooding, and improve water quality and public health. The City is implementing a Green Infrastructure Strategic Plan by advancing green infrastructure projects including: the City Hall Sustainable Stormwater Project, Washington Street Redesign, Southwest Resiliency Park, 7th & Jackson Resiliency Park, Northwest Resiliency Park, and Delay, Store, Discharge components of the Hudson River Rebuild by Design Project.
